Barry Katz // extended bio

Dr. Barry M. Katz is Professor of Design at the California College of the Arts, Consulting Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University, and Fellow at IDEO, Inc., the Silicon Valley-based design and innovation consultancy, where he has helped to formulate the concept of “Design Thinking.”

Dr. Katz was educated at McGill University in Montréal, the London School of Economics, and received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Cruz.  He lives in Palo Alto, California.

In his academic life Barry studies the history and philosophy of design and is the founder and sole practitioner of the discipline of Rhetorical Engineering.  His writings have appeared in many academic, professional, and popular journals and he has served as Contributing Editor to I.D. Magazine and Metropolis, and Executive Editor of the Design Book Review.  He is the author, with Tim Brown, of Change By Design: How Design Thinking can Transform Organizations and Inspire Innovation, and with Branko Lukic, of NONOBJECT. He is currently at work on a new book, Tectonic Shift:  The Unstable History of Silicon Valley Design, to be published by the MIT Press.  Barry conducts workshops and lectures internationally on topics pertaining to the intersection of design and culture.
